Indians Sink Rival Admirals in One Run Thriller
GULFPORT—Hawtin Buchanan struck out five in two innings of relief and blasted a solo homer to right field in the sixth to power the Biloxi Indians past the Gulfport Admirals 1-0 Monday at Joe Sam Owen Field in Gulfport.
Jordan Skog, Jordan Mata, Buchanan, and Derek Whitfield combined for a one-hit effort against the Admirals. Colton Caver picked up that hit with a lead off single off of Skog in the first for the Admirals.
Biloxi coach Kevin Burdine said his pitchers impressed him. “I thought it was one of the best pitched games of the year,” said Burdine. “It was great to have all four of those guys come in there and throw like that.”
Gulfport had bases loaded in the first and failed to score. Biloxi did the same in the fourth inning.
Cody Brown, Mata, Craig Wilson, and Ben Hurtado all singled for Biloxi.
Jonathan Holder drew the start for Gulfport, and he struck out seven and scattered three hits in four scoreless innings. Myles Gentry (5-4) took the loss for the Admirals.
Buchanan (6-3) picked up the win for Biloxi. Whitfield worked a perfect seventh for his second save of the season.
Biloxi (19-6) will face St. Martin Friday before hosting the winner of the Harrison Central/Jim Hill series in the playoffs. Gulfport (20-5) plays a doubleheader at Picayune Friday to tune up for their playoff run, and they will host the winner of the Brandon/Pascagoula series.
