BILOXI–The Biloxi Indians hit their way past the Long Beach Bearcats in a 13-6 non-division game Saturday at Biloxi.
The Bearcats lit the scoreboard first with a two run first inning. Biloxi starter Jordan Skog hit Marc Decena with a pitch. Decena scored on a Garrett Larosa double. Larosa scored when Blake Nabors hit a double.
The Indians scored four runs to answer in their first at bat. Cody Brown led off with a triple and scored on a Jordan Mata single. Craig Wilson brought Mata home with a single. Two batters later, Derek Whitfield singled, moving Wilson to third. Skog drove in Wilson with a single, and Marcus Lawton hit a sacrifice fly to left to bring in Whitfield.
Long Beach added a run in the top of the second, but the Indians responded with a six spot in their half of the second. Nick Wheelock led the inning off with a double, and he scored on error that put Brown on base. Mata doubled in Brown, and Wilson singled in Mata. Whitfield scored Wilson with a two run homer, chasing Long Beach starter Blake Dubbisson. Josh Perronne took the mound and walked Skog who later scored on a passed ball to give Biloxi a 10-3 lead.
In the third, Whitfield replaced Skog on the mound, and Long Beach took advantage of three singles and a hit batsman to score three runs, cutting the lead to 10-6.
The Indians scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to extend their lead to 13-6. Hawtin Buchanan led the inning off with a double. Skog walked, and Lawton scored Buchanan’s courtesy runner Scottie Reid with a single. Wheelock hit a two RBI double to bring Skog and Lawton across the plate to score the final runs for the Indians.
Whitfield pitched five innings for Biloxi to pick up the win. He struck out five and allowed three runs and six hits.
Mata had three RBIs on three hits, a double and two singles to lead the Biloxi hitters.
Biloxi coach Kevin Burdine is happy with the way his team is hitting. “I like the way we’re swinging the bat,” said Burdine. “We came out today and swung it well early. I’m pleased with our guys. They’re getting up there, and they are battling and being aggressive.”
The win improved Biloxi’s record to 9-3. Long Beach fell to 5-5.
