Indians Topple Rebels in 7-6A Opener
BILOXI–The Biloxi Indians (4-2, 1-0) opened up their 7-6A season by picking up a 8-3 victory over the George County Rebels.
Senior Hawtin Buchanan took the mound for Biloxi, and he went the distance for the Indians, pitching all seven innings for the victory. Buchanan struck out eight batters while allowing three runs. He retired the first eleven hitters he faced.
Buchanan also did damage with the bat in his hand. In the bottom of the first inning, catcher Craig Wilson reached on an error, and Buchanan drove him in with a single. In the third inning, Jordan Mata laid down a bunt to pick up a single, and he advanced on a throwing error by George County pitcher Mason Robbins. Two batters later, Buchanan sent a two run shot over the fence in right centerfield to put the Indians ahead 3-0.
In the bottom of the fourth, third baseman Jordan Skog singled, and right fielder Tyler Wilson walked. Both runners were scored when centerfielder Nick Wheelock doubled them home, giving Biloxi a 5-0 lead.
George County put themselves back into the ball game in the top of the fifth, scoring three runs. Daniel Goff led the inning off with a walk. Later in the inning, Rikki Pribanic was hit by a pitch, and Tyler Holifield tripled them in. He would later score on a passed ball.
The Indians would rally back in the bottom of the fifth. Derek Whitfield picked up an RBI double, and Jordan Skog drove in Scottie Reid, the runner for Whitfield. The Indians would later add their eighth run in the bottom of the sixth when Wilson singled home shortstop Cody Brown. The Indians held the Rebels scoreless in the sixth and seventh innings.
Both Buchanan and Skog had two hits for the Indians. Biloxi travels to George County Friday night before playing Lumberton and Stone County Saturday.
